HORNBY CHEMICAL WORKS
Few Complaints Of Fumes
Complaints that fumes being discharged from the chemical and phosphate works at Hornby of Kempthorne, Prosser, Ltd., were noxious and a nuisance to residents were now negligible, the works manager (Mr G. A. Claridge) jaid yesterday.
A year or so ago, residents on the Main South road cotnElained that garden shrubs were eing destroyed, their houses damaged and their living conditions made unpleasant by the periodical discharge of fumes “We are definitely complying with the Air Pollution Regulations introduced under the Health Act.” said Mr Claridge.
Inspectors carried out periodical tests at the works and the content of the fumes had been proved to be within the limits prescribed, said ’Mr Claridge. Whether the occasional complaint of a nuisance was actually based on the content of the effluent or was imagination, he was not sure, added Mr Claridge A scrubbing plant had been installed in the mixing plant since the original complaints by some residents were made, he said. The regulations provide that in every superphosphate works the waste gases drawn from the dens and mixers shall be so treated at the discretion of the chemical inspector, that either not less than 99 per cent of the acid fluorine compound 5 are eliminated or the gasses discharged to the atmosphere contain fluorine compound in no greater concentration in one standard cubic foot than the equivalent of 01 grain of sulphur trioxide.
A manufacturer has the right of appeal against the decisions of the chemical inspector.
