PLAYER ORDERED OFF FIELD
Representative Game Incident A Hurunui sub-union third grade player. G. Upston, who was ordered off the field for foul play rluring a match between the Canterbury and Hurunui third grade representative teams, is to be dealt with by the Hurunui sub-union’s committee. Last evening the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union received a letter from the referee of the game (Mr G. S. Atkins) and it was decided to refer it to the sub-union for action and for a report. The referee’s letter read as follows:
“During the first half I had occasion to penalise both teams for late tackling, obstruction and fighting. For the latter, during this period, I cautioned two Hurunui players and spoke to both captains.
“Early in the second half, again I had occasion to caution two Hurunui players for blatantly fighting in separate incidents. “On the first occasion the person involved was the player who was later ordered off. In both cases I called up the Hurunui captain. “Approximately 20 minutes after the commencement of the second half, with Hurunui attacking on about the 25-yard line, the ball came loose and was taken by a Canterbury player who in turn was tackled and lost possession of the ball, by a Hurunui player, Gordon Upston. The Canterbury player was on his back and Upston, on one knee, was hitting him on the face with his fist. 1 blew the whistle and ordered Upston off the field.”
