The Agriculture Department of the Cook Islands have two vacancies lor Extension Officers to assist in development of Copra and Coffee production by the local people. Broad experience in copra or coffee husbandry and in copra and' coffee processing essential. Appointees required to establish nurseries, distribute plants and advise on cultivation, pest control and processing. Headquarters for Copra Officer will be in Rarotonga, and for Coffee Officer in Mangaia. Mangaia is 110 miles E.S.E. from Rarotonga. Each appointee may be required to spend periods in other islands. Housing with heavy furniture provided for married officers at nominal rental. Board and lodgings available for single appointees at Hotel Rarotonga, present charge being approximately £5 a week. Suitable quarters with furniture provided at nominal charge for single officer if stationed in Mangaia. Salary paid according to qualifications and experience up to £1375 a year for graduate and up to £1135 a year for nongraduate. Married officer accompanied by his family will receive an allowance of £ 125 a year in respect of his wife and £5B a year lor each child. Income tax rates are at present lower than in N.Z. Secretary-Manager. 7532 SOCIAL WORK TRAINEES VACANCY No. 2080 APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment as social work trainees, in locations to be decided. Trainees, after satisfactory completion of training, considered for appointment to positions such as Probation Officer, Child Welfare Officer, Maori Welfare Officer, and the like. Applicants should be aged from 22 to 26 years. Preference given to those who have completed, or who are well advanced in relevant University degrees, or who have had training in related fields, or who have had satisfactory experience in voluntary social work or group work. Appointments as trainees will be at a salary of up to £785 a year, for men and £645 a year for "women according to educational qualifications and experience. There will be opportunity for further promotion on merit during training. Duration of traineeship will normally be two years but may be extended or reduced in special circumstances. Trainees without suitable practical experience required to transfer between agencies from time to time AU trainees required to accept placements assigned to them, boin as to locality and department, though personal circumstances and preference taken into account as far as possible. Where trainees are academically qualified, they should be prepared, on completion of training and if then selected in open competition, to undertake full-time study af School of Social Science, Victoria University of Wellington, on usual conditions regarding leave with pay and completion of bonds. It should be noted that award of study leave to attend School will not follow automatically upon satisfactorj- competion of traineeship. Further, where trainee's work or potential does not reach standard required. traineeship may be terminate dat any time, whereupon trainee would be considered for transfer to a more suitable position.
