POWER FAILURES IN ASHBURTON
Heavy North-west Cale A north-westerly gale in Ashburton last evening caused isolated power failures in several areas of the county and town. Shortly before 10 p.m., the Ashburton Electric Power and Gas Board received calls to power failures in the Lowcliffe, Mayfield, Somerton and Springburn districts.
Power was also off in East street, Ashburton, for about 45 minutes.
A spokesman for the power board said that the damage could not be assessed until early today. Power board employees worked through the night in an effort to restore power as soon as possible. The Post Office had no reports of telephone failures late last night. Failure in City Lightning is believed to have been the cause of a short power failure in Christchurch last evening. The Roxburgh-Islington 220 kv transmission line tripped out at 8.25 p.m. and power was restored to all affected areas at 8.33 p.m. The areas fed from the Bromley and Papanui sub-stations were without power for two minutes and power was off in parts of the city for up to eight minutes.
