110 DEGREES BELOW
Record At South Pole
The temperature sank to a record 110 degrees below zero at the United States South Pole station on Sunday, according to a message received at the American advance headquarters at Harewood.
An earlier message sent on Friday evening said that temperatures had been averaging minus 100 degrees for the last four days, and men had been dragging heaters over the ice to warm their vehicles.
The men who had spent the winter at the South Pole were looking forward to mail, fresh vegetables and, most important, the relief crew, said the message. The main ice runway at McMurdo Sound was 80 per cent, completed according to a message sent from the station at Hut Point on Friday. The four carpenters— Rasmussen, McDowell, Spindler and Russell—had completed all the planned projects, including the barracks, the admiral’s quarters and the galley. The finishing touches were being put to cargo packed for airdropping to the Byrd and South Pole stations. Dry provisions had been broken out and set aside for air-drops.
