FOOTBALLER DIES

Fatally Injured In League Game

(New Zealand Preet Association) DUNEDIN, Sept IS. A Dunedin junior Rugby League player died in hospital early this morning after being injured in a match on Saturday. He was

Errol Raymond McCormack, aged 18, of 21 Serpentine avenue, a member of the Kensington Youth Centre team which played City at Tahuna park.

Towards the end of the game, for the Otago League Junior Cup, McCormack, at right wing, tackled E. Humphries, a City wing. McCormack apparently struck his head hard on Humphries’s hip, suffering a suspected spinal fracture. Both players were taken to Dunedin Hospital, where Humphries was treated and discharged. After an X-ray, McCormack underwent an operation, but later his condition deteriorated and he died at 2.30 a.m. today. McCormack’s death is believed to be only the second in Rugby League in New Zealand. Some years ago a Canterbury representative player died as a result of an injury received in a match against Wellington.
