Cathedral Recitals

Sir, —The Cathedral' authorities deserve our gratitude for presenting the recently held lunchhour recitals. The last one, in particular, in which the choristers took part, was Extraordinarily moving. It would be difficult to find a more adequately trained and finely poised group of choristers that delighted us on this occasion and our grateful thanks and congratulations go to Mr C. Foster Browne for their splendid training. His own organ solo, admirably chosen in keeping with the choral numbers, were a revelation of fine taste and perfection of registration. As foi the singing the beautifully sus tained tone with admirably controlled dynamic shading realised one’s dream of what music is meant to accomplish in raising us above care into a sphere of rare beauty. In particular the part-pinging in Mozart’s “Ave Verum” was rendered with the purist devotion and created an unforgettable experience.—Yours, etc.,

ERNEST EMPSON, September 13, 1959.
