INSECT SWARM ON ROAD
Resembled “Huge Dust Cloud”
A swarm of insects which gave the impression of a dust cloud several miles long was reported yesterday by a motorist who travelled on the ChristchurchAkaroa highway on Saturday morning.
The motorist said he ran into the swarm about 10 a.m. on Saturday when he was a short distance past Motukarara on the way to Little River.
The swarm covered his windshield and blocked the radiator grille of his car, he said. “When the sun shone on them they looked like a huge cloud of dust and ran from the road right up the hilside,” the motorist said.
“For miles and miles,” he replied when asked how long the car drove through the swarm. The motorist said he did not want his name printed. The insects taken from his car yesterday afternoon were about three-eighths of an inch long with needle-thin black abdomen* on which were wMte stripes.
