U.N. Approves Arms Talks
(N.Z Press Association-Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. 11. The United Nations Disarmament Commission today unanimously endorsed the Big Four plan to resume talks next year in Geneva on arms limitation in a new 10-nation committee. The action came after a threatened small-nation attack on the proposal was averted by intense diplomatic efforts behind the scenes.
The vote brought to an unexpected close a meeting of the 82-nation Disarmament Commission. It had been expected to last two or three days.
The resolution welcomed the decision of the United States, the Soviet Union, Britain and France to set up a new committee for the next round of arms talks, but declared that the primary responsibility for disamament rested with the United Nations.
