LONDON, September 12. Tottenham Hotspurs, the North London dub that has spent about £200,000 in building up its team, moved to top spot in the English first division soccer table , today with a brilliant away 5-1 win over Manchester United.
This impressive win before more than 554)00 spectators at Old Trafford gave Spun the league leadership on a superior goal average. The Londoners have scored 10 points from seven games, the same tally as the reigning champions Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley, who fill second and third positions respectively. . Wolverhampton, undismayed by their surprise mid-week reverse at Fulham, came back to top form to end Blackburn Rovers’ unbeaten record. The Wolves’ 3-1 win deposed the Rovers from the league leaderttx ai: ax-sSW’ Burnley, tipped ai dark horses for the championship, kept up with the' leaders with a workmanlike 2-1 win over the formidable West Bromwich Albion. Blackburn, Arsenal and Fulham are all one point behind the leaders. Arsenal won 3-1 at home against Manchester City, but should have won more decisively as Bert Trautmann. City’s German-born ' goalkeeper, defied the Londoners almost on his own for long periods.
Fulham continued its winning run with a good 4-2 home win over the cup finalists, Luton Town. As in the first division, three clubs have equal points at the top of league two. But Aston Villa, hoping to climb back to the higher league in one season, leads Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City on goal averages. All have 11 points out of a possible 14. Norwich City, cup heroes last season, maintained its unbeaten record in division three, with a crushing 5-1 win over Port Vale, taking them to the top of the league with 11 points. In the fourth division, Walsall, 3-1 winners at Bradford, lead on goal averages from Torquay United, which won 2-0 at Gateshead. Both have 11' points. Across the border, Hearts, the only team unbeaten in any competitive Scottish match this season, brought off another fine win, beating Celtic in Glasgow 4-3. But with only three league games played by each club so far, the lead in division one is held by Raith Rovers and Rangers, with maximum points. Raith. 2-0 winners at Dundee, have a superior goal average to their Glasgow rivals, who won by the only goal at Hibernian’s ground. The shock of the day was mighty Motherwell’s loss to promoted Ayr United, who won decisively by 5-2, helped by a hat-trick from Peter Price. >'
