TROTTING Win For Invicta In Main Amberley Race

The Dunedin-owned Invicta showed improvement on his efforts at Addington last month with a decisive win in the Amberley Trotting Club Free-for-all, the ' feature event at the Amberley Trotting Club’s matinee meeting on Saturday. Inyicta was never far away and he ranged up to the leaders at the straight entrance. From then on he had his opponents well covered and he won unchallenged by three lengths.

Invicta’s effort suggested that he was returning to the good form he showed last season. He paced the 13 furlongs in 3min 312-ssec, a smart effort considering the strong wind the horses had to contend with.

Josie Gay and Macklin both gave solid displays of pacing and they finished second and third respectively to Invicta. An equaiisatox double was won by Space Patrol and Florita, the combination returning £27 for ss. The club received good support from owners and trainers and a full programme of 10 races and a two-year-old parade run in two heats was carried out without a hitch, the last race being run only two minutes behind the advertised time.

There was a surprisingly large attendance, which invested £2230 on the equalisator. The track was fast, but very rough and there was considerable dust. Invicta’s Win Invicta was never far away in the Amberley Trotting Club Free-For-All and he raced away over the final furlong for an easy win. Unite, On Side and Gay Alabama were slow early. Anne Peterson began well from the second line and she quickly took over the role of pacemaker,- leading through the straight with one mile left from Gold Light, Battle Fling, Josie Gay, Macklin, Ricochet (three wide), Invicta, Gay Alabama and Mulgrove. Anne Peterson began to tire soon after the half-mile and Josie Gay soon raced past her. Mulgrove and Invicta (wide out) were on terms with her racing to the straight, with Anne Peterson, Macklin and Lady Shona handy. Invicta continued his run and finished boldly to win easily by three lengths from Josie Gay, which raced right up to her best. Mulgrove was half a length back third, after giving a smooth display throughout. Macklin finished well along the inside for a close fourth, just shading Lady Shona, with Bon Ton, Unite and Anne Peterson following. Greymouth Pacer ■ The Greymouth-owned pacer, Falsehood, gave a pleasing display of pacing to win the Glenmark Handicap. He began well and C. S. Donald was content to keep him in sixth place for the first few furlongs. He improved to be handy to Arania, Disraeli and Smokeaway racing to the straight, with Wainoni Loyal and Red Belle well clear of the remainder. Falsehood drew up'to Arania inside the furlong and he finished full of running to win by a length.

Arania paced a fine race for a three-year-old to hold on for second against older and more seasoned horses. She forced all the pace and was not knocked about when joined by Falsehood. She looks in for a most successful season.

Smokeaway, after being close up all the way, held on for third, ahead of Disraeli, with Wainoni Loyal, Red Belle, Weekender and Maxwelton next. Decisive Win

Florita, a place-getter at New Brighton recently, was much too good for her rivals in the First Amuri Handicap. She raced in third place until the straight entrance and then raced past the leaders with ease. She did not have to be driven out to win by a length from Young Douglas, which was one of the leaders ail the way. Medalla -made up ground to finish third a head back, with Cumnock Lass, Fernleaf, Alison’s Pride and Bocasa following. Bocasa, Alison’s Pride, Fernleaf, Four Peaks and Mainland met trouble in a mix-up at the mile post caused when Young Douglas shied at a wire across the track at the winning post The Halswell trainer, S. A. Edwards, who trained and drove Florita, produced Parados to win the Second Amuri Handicap. Parados was restrained in about seventh place in the early stages by M. L. Edwards, who improved with him racing to the straight. He quickly joined Zenith and finished best to win by a neck. Little Molly was beaten off third, ahead of Belfast Lady. Wendy Charles and Floreate. The Two-Year-Olds

A gelding by Captain Adios from Spangled Scott and Garreen, a filly by Garrison Hanover from Young Satin, won the heats of the two-year-old parade run over about half a mile.

The Captain Adios gelding, a member of G. B. Noble’s team andone of the first crop of his sire, raced up to the pacemaker, a gelding by Stormyway from Battle Flight trained by C. R. BerketL with about two furlongs to run. The Captain Adios gelding did best in the run home to win by half a length. Gay Bingen, a filly by Young Grattan from Bingen Reel, was beaten off in third place, ahead of a U. ScottDauphine gelding and a colt by Burns Night from Constellation. The winner paced the half-mile in about Imin 8 2-ssec. Garreen was much too seasoned for her rivals in the second heat and she recorded Imin 5 3-ssec for the distance. She raced right away from her opponents and won by about 50 yards. A gelding by Captain Adios from Spangled Queen got up for second, ahead of a gelding by Vaft Dieman from Patsy Grattan, with a filly by Captain Adios from Aileen Hall following. Easy For Space Patrol

The Johnny Globe five-year-old Space Patrol graduated from maiden company with an easy win in the Christchurch Trotting Clubs’ Handicap. Space Patrol began well from the second line and he was soon in front from Sure Angela and Somerset Rose. Space Patrol led Somerset Rose approaching the straight, with Sure Angela tiring in third place, ahead of Great Mystery,

Samantha, Gold Pride and Aurelia. Space Patrol did not look like weakening and he woh with plenty in hand by five lengths.

Somerset Rose, after having every chance, battled t on for second, half a length in front of Samantha, which came home well once in the open. She looks well and should soon improve on that effort. Aurelia, the backmarker. showed speed to get up for fourth, ahead of Great Mystery, Bon Deed and Moneymusk. , Devanter, which was pulled up, Paddy’s Day, Vanimond. Moneymusk, Rani Scott and Black Abbess lost ground at the start. Van Cheetah in Form

Van Cheetah gave a bold display of trotting from the back mark of 84 yards to win the Hurunui Handicap. He began well and was fifth when the field had settled down. He followed Dianthus Girl into the straight and ran on strongly to win by a neck. Van Cheetah trotted a sound race at New Brighton recently and he may be close to worthwhile form. ■Teejay, after being fairly handy throughout, came home well for second, clear of Dianthus Girl, with Ideal, Guiliano and Mina Lass well clear of the remainder. The four placed horses in the four heats all qualified to start at totalisator meetings by recording 3min 30sec or better for the mile and a half. Fastest time of 3min 22sec went to Surveyor, easy winner of the first heat. A three-year-old gelding by Hal Tryax “■°tn Rosehaven, he is trained by C. R. Berkett for Mr A. McKenzie, of Invercargill. Surveyor took the lead with about seven furi2”gj ! ef ‘ and h e won with something in hand.
