Auckland 12, Beats Taranaki 9
(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Sept. 13. More than 15,000 spectators who went to Rugby Park, New Plymouth, on Saturday, for the TaranakiAuckland match in the expectation of seeing bright Rugby, must have gone home disappointed. Auckland won by 12 points to 9—three penalty goals and a try to two penalty goals and a try. There were some bright spots, mostly provided by A. H Clarke, T, R. Lineen, and D. J. Matnieson, and a little too much of the wrong sort of fire in the forwards.
In the backs, A. A. Edgar and K. C Briscoe both played exceptionally well as halves, some of the latter’s passes being tremendously long and fast.
A. H. Clarke constantly caught the eye and impressed as much as any Auckland back. Lineen and D. J. Mathieson had a great tussle with honours about even. J. F. McCullough and R. H. Brown were both competent, but had too little ball to cut many capers. A. Pryor and D. E. Caughey were the pick of the Auckland tight forwards, but the whole Taranaki pack lacked its usual fire. Auckland's loose forwards, R. Graham, H. K. Emery and W. Nathan, all had a field day, harrving Briscoe and McCullough continuously For Auckland, J. Sibun scored a try and W. A Davies kicked three penalty goals. T. P. O’Sullivan scored a fine try for Taranaki and J. L. Bayly kicked two penalty goals.
