WORLD REFUGEE YEAR
N.Z. Help Praised; More Needed
New Zealand’s quick and generous response to the United Nations appeal for World Refugee Year—it has passed its original target of £lOO,OOO, and is on the way towards £150,000 —has been praised by the United Nations central refugee organisation in Geneva.
This organisation publishes at regular intervals a World Refugee Year newsletter, which has an international circulation. It recently began a series of special suplements dealing with the conduct of the World Refugee Year appeal in different countries, and the first of these supplements was devoted to New Zealand’s effort.
“Naturally we are proud that New Zealand has been chosen for special mention,” said Mr Colin Morrison, secretary-treasurer of C.0.R.5.0. “We take this as a tribute not only to the very many active helpers in this deserving cause, but also to the thousands of generous citizens whose donations have made this appeal so successful so far. "But more is needed,” said Mr Morrison. “We feel that our target figure of £150,000 is well within the abilities of New Zealand, and we are confident of getting it. But to do so we shall need the help of those who so far have not given anything. “The appeal is an urgent one, the success of which will mean the difference between a normal life and a continuation of misery for very many victims of political upheavals overseas. We ask our people who have not given anything to be, as thousands of their fellow New Zealanders have already been, generous and prompt with their donations, which may be posted to C.0.R.5.0. at Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin,” he said.
