CURRENT NOTES
Red Cross Counsellors.— Two further counsellors of honour (bringing the total now appointed to 19) were appointed by the annual conference of the New Zealand Red Cross Society at Gisborne. The new counsellors of honour are Mrs Margaret Galloway, wife of the SecretaryGeneral (Mr M. S. Galloway) and Miss Margaret C. Bain. The position of counsellor of honour is conferred for outstanding service to Red Cross. Mrs Galloway joined the Wellington sub-centre of Red CrosS in 1922 and in 1937 transferred to the thenformed Khandallah sub-centre. Miss Bain joined the North Canterbury centre in 1914.—(P.A.)
To Study In Britain.— Miss Vivienne Leslie, a talented Dunedin composer who was last year awarded the Fanny Evans travelling scholarship in music by the University of Otago, and who recently gained the Government bursary, will leave for Britain later this month to study with Mattyas Seiber. Seiber is a brilliant and versatile composer and a pupil of Kodaly. Miss Leslie graduated from Otago University with a bachelor of music degree with honours last year and gained her licentiate of the Royal - Schools of Music in pianoforte.— (P. A.)
Ballet Examinations.— Miss Bettina Edwards, of Auckland,' will arrive in Christchurch today to conduct annual examinations for the Royal Academy of Dancing, London. For children between seven and 17 years, the examinations have this year attracted 200 entries, a record.
Belfast Garden Club.—Mr E. Rogers gave a demonstration on the propagation of plants from seed at the recent annual meeting of the Belfast Garden Club. Officers elected were:—Patron Mrs A. J. Smith; president, Mrs A. Huntington; vice-presidents, Mesdames E. Crundwell, and N Harrold and Messrs E. Wilson, J. Robinson and W. Brown; committee, Mesdames J. Salt, R Don and R. Broadhurst; flower stewards, Mesdames A. Rogers and A. J. Smith; sales-table stewards, Messrs A. Rogers and W. Brown; librarian, Mr A. Huntington; secretary, Mrs L. Wright.
Mothers and Daughters.— About 30 mothers and daughters attended a mother and daughter afternoon organised by the Young Women’s Christian Association Teenage Club recently. The president of the Y.W.C.A. board (Miss C. Robinson) was present. The club meets regularly but this was the first time mothers had attended with their daughters. Two films were shown, and songs and guitar items were given by Joy Everett of the Teenage Club. Tea was served by the girls.
