EISENHOWER IN SCOTLAND
“Very Successful Mission” Ends
(N.Z Press Association—Copyright)
(Rec. 10 p.m.) PARIS, Sept. 4. President Eisenhower left Paris for Scotland by air today at the end of a “very successful” mission to Bonn, London and Paris for consultations with the Allied leaders before meeting Mr Khrushchev in Washington in mid-September.
Mr Eisenhower flew in his Boeing 707 jet airliner to Prestwick to spend a few days resting at Culzean Castle in Scotland before returning to Washington early next week.
Mr Eisenhower, in a two-day visit to Paris, won the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people who acclaimed him wherever he went. He reached several important agreements with Genera) Charles de Gaulle. These, as disclosed by a joint press communique issued late last night, include - Complete accord on the question of Berlin. Both France and the United States strongly hold that the integrity of Berlin must be preserved and the freedom of some two million West Berliners protected.
Agreement that an East-West summit conference, useful in principle, should take place “onlv when there is some possibility of definite accomplishment.” The two Presidents emphasised their devotion to the 15nation North Atlantic Alliance, which both France and the United States regard as the cornerstone of Western defence and security. Reaffirmation by Mr Eisenhower and General de Gaulle of the
importance they attach to the resumption of negotiations on general and controlled disarmament. Diplomatic sources said that Britain, France and the United States would soon be putting detailed proposals to Russia for the setting up of a small negotiating body on general disarmament. Such a body could consist of 10 nations with parity of representation between East and West. The Big Four Powers are known to feel that the present United Nations Disarmament Commission of 82 members is too unwieldy a body for effective and detailed negotiations on a very complex subject.
