“Kidnapping” Incident

Sir, —Possibly one’s sense of humour and other values is fading with the years, but it is difficult to see anything particularly funny or meritorious in the exploit of the students who kidnapped Mr Winston McCarthy and held him to ransom on the morning of the test match; and not least on account of the expedient adopted to lure him into their clutches. That their victim, not usually, one suspects at a loss for words, was “stunned” and reduced to silence for 10 minutes by his abduction can well be understood; as it may be readily imaginable what the repercussions would have been had he decided to call their crude and inconsiderate bluff.—Yours, etc., TOUCHLINE. August 31, 1959.
