CATHEDRAL SQUARE
Design Problems
Answered
The use of paving and pools to tie the Cathedral in with the Godley plot area for more integration and to make a haven for the pedestian was among suggestions made in answers on student design problems set by the regional planning officer, Miss Nancy Northcroft, for members of the Christchurch Architectural Association.
The suggestion was given as one solution to the senior problem on the development of Cathedral square, assuming it had been limited to a true roundabout system.
The junior problem set by Miss Northcroft was for members to list items of street furniture, sketching a few with comments on their design and fitness for purpose. The exercise was intended to draw attention to the number and variety of objects which it is claimed clutter the streets and detract from their attractiveness.
Miss Northcroft, the guest of the association at its monthly meeting, gave criticisms of the solutions to the design problems she had set.
Miss Northcroft showed slides on some of the problems associated with traffic control, slum clearance and rehabilitation and traffic surveys. She later gave indications on the siting of buildings in towns.
