"Beauty-Parlour" For Nurses
NURSES living-in at Princess Margaret " Hospital will have their own shampoo rooms, fitted with beauty-parlour style handbasins and spray faucets—these are among the many up-to-date facilities in the £500,000 nurses 1 home.
Standing directly behind the hospital, the nurses’ home is built of reinforced concrete and faced in the same red brick veneer.
Each nurse living here will have her own private bedroom furnished with beds with inner-sprung mattresses, a built-in wardrobe, a dressing table and writing table and a chair. Sisters have, in addition, a washbasin and a sewing chair in their rooms, while the four senior sisters will live in bed-sitting rooms. For the matron and assistant matron there are two flats. Ground Floor On the ground floor are lounges for the sisters, the nurses, and some of the domestic staff, seven reception rooms where nurses can entertain their guests, three writing rooms, and two inquiry offices —one at the main entrance and another at the west entrance.
Opposite the main doors is the corridor leading to the dining rooms. The largest of these, which will be shared by sisters and nurses, will seat 224. For the domestic staff, there will be an 80-seat dining room. Both will be furnished
with small tables, each seating four.
All the meals will be prepared in the home’s own kitchen.
Upper Floors
On the upper floors there are sitting rooms with kitchens adjoining for the preparation of teas and suppers. There are four lifts in the building, and on the roof, above the fifth floor, will be a sundeck.
On the fifth floor of the main hospital block is a suite of 10 bedrooms and reception rooms for the resident doctors. These are reached by the lift from the main vestibule.
There the doctors have their own panelled lounge and recreation room, a dining room and servery, a reception room, and two studies furnished with writing desks. Bedrooms Each bedroom has a built-in compactum, a writing desk, an occasional chair, a washbasin, a walk-in wardrobe, a bedside table and a telephone—and one of the best views from the hospital.
Like the nurses, the doctors also have a sundeck above their quarters. • •
