TENSION ON BERLIN
American Hopes For Easing
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright, BERLIN, August 29.
President Eisenhower, in a letter to West Berlin’s governing Mayor (Dr. Willy Brandt) has expressed the hope that during the discussions of the coming month it would be possible “to end the present period of tension over Berlin. “The Western Powers stand firm in their determination to preserve the integrity of Berlin and to foster conditions which will eventually permit the German people to be reunited into one free nation,” the President’s letter continued. He said the limited time available for his trip to Europe “made it impossible for me to come to Berlin at this time.”
He conveyed to Mr Brandt and the people of Berlin his personal greetings and expressed the admiration of the American people for the attitude of Berliners in face of the difficulties of the last year.
