M. Barnard’s 128 Against Indians

Barnard hit his first century of the season to lead Hampshire to the formidable score of 360 for nine on the opening day of the match against the Indian cricketers at Bournemouth, Hampshire, today. Going in when three wickets had fallen for 74, Barnard tamed the Indians’ spin attack of R. G. Nadkami and C. P. Borde with a solid 128. A solid fourth-wicket stand of 78 between Barnard and H. Horton (461 pulled Hampshire back from the precarious 74 for three, but the day’s highlight was the sixth-wicket stand in which Barnard and P. Sainsbury (53) put on 132. The tourists missed the services of the pace bowler, R. B. Desai, after the early stages. He broke down just before lunch with a recurrence of an ankle injury, and left the field. G. Tribe First To Complete Double

Tribe, Northamptonshire’s 38-vear-old Australian all-rounder, became the first man in England this season to achieve the double of 100 wickets and 1000 runs when he reached 52 against Middlesex at Lord’s. He finished with 56 not out - It was the seventh time he had completed the double in the last eight years. It was his first appearance at Lord’s. He will return to Australia in October.
