CHRISTIAN BASIS OF EDUCATION

Boards’ Conference Affirms Principle

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 27. On the ground that the teaching and principles of Christianity provided the foundation of all good character building, the Secondary School Boards’ Association declared at its conference in Wellington today that the elements of Christian belief and history should be taught to children in the public postprimary schools of this country, with due safeguards to conscience.

Professor R. T. Sussex (Christchurch Girls’ High School), who introduced the subject, said all that was sought was a declaration of principle that the national system of education was based on the Christian faith. It was not intended to jeopardise the right of individual head teachers to decide the form of religious observance suitable for their schools.
