APPLE PRICES
Board Replies To Criticism
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 26. The policy of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board is to give the consumer an adequate supply of good quality apples and pears at a reasonable price sufficient to cover costs and give a small margin of profit." a spokesman of the board said today. He was commenting on the concern expressed at the annual meeting in Invercargill of the New Zealand Federation of Retail Fruiterers and Greengrocers over the continued high prices of apples in New Zealand, as set by the board. The spokesman said that whenever retailers quoted wholesale prices it was always the maximum price of 35s that was mentioned. The extensive range of lower prices for other varieties, grades, and sizes was consistently overlooked.
The spokesman added that the average price paid by retailers throughout New Zealand for all apples and pears purchased up to July 31 was 23s a case.
