Aviation Pioneer Dies In U.K.
HV.Z Press •association—Uopyriqnt, LONDON, August 19. Mr Claude Grahame-White, one of the world pioneers of aviation and motoring, died of pneumonia in hospital at Nice today, two days before his eightieth birthday. Mr Grahame-White was the first Englishman to be granted a certificate of proficiency as an aviator. He started the first British flying school. Also a motoring pioneer, he owned one of the first petroldriven motor-cars in England in 1896. when the speed limit was 12 miles an hour.
He was the first Englishman to obtain the French Aero Club pilot’s certificate and held the sixth pilot’s licence granted by the Royal Aero Club.
