Fifty-one Boys At
Lincoln
Fifty-one boys, selected from 103 applicants throughout New Zealand, will go to Lincoln College this evening for the New Zealand Brass Bands Association's school for junior bandsmen. The school will continue until Saturday. August 29. The principal will be Mr W. L. Francis, of Auckland. One section will be under Mr N. G. Goffin, of Wellington, and the other under Mr R. Simpson, of Christchurch. They will be assisted by Mr V. Belgrave, of Palmerston North, and Mr R. Waterston, of Dunedin. These five h<dd auditions in various parts of New Zealand to select the boys, all under 17, for the school. The boys will receive tuition in the theory of music as well as in playing the instruments. The idea is to give them a week's training under leaders in this field apart from their usual teachers and conductors.
The school will be held annually and next year it will' be at Massey College. A demonstration concert will be given by these young bandsmen in Christchurch on . the evening of August 29. Junior Championships
The New Zealand Brass Bands Association is holding its annual junior solo championships in Christchurch today for which there are nearly 150 entries. Four halls will be in use. those at the Y.W.C.A., the Y.M.C.A., Charles Begg and Company, Ltd., and the Orange Hall. There are 52 entries in the sections for players 15 and under 17. the judges being Mr R. Simpson and Mr F.' Smith (Timaru). There are 64 entries in the sections for players 13 and under 15 for which the judges are Mr N. Goffin and Mr J. Rafferty. In the under 13 section there are 22 entries and the judge is Mr V. Belgrave. There are nine entries for the quartet section, the judge being Mr F. Smith.
