NEW ERA FOR BOARD
Message From Chairman “yyiTH extensive development works at Lyttelton incorporating road and rail access to our wharves and unproved road access to the port within sight, we are entering a new era,” said the chairman (Mr W. P. Glue) in a message marking the opening of the new Port building.
Claiming fairly to have an extensive knowledge of local authorities and the various functions they performed, Mr Glue, who has been a member of the board since 1948 and chairman since 1956, said: “The importance of the Harbour Board cannot be over-emphasised; but this importance is not always recognised, probably because the port of Lyttelton is separated from
Christchurch by the Port Hills. “This building will stress the importance of the part played by the board in the community. It is a valuable addition to the city. As one who has spent a lifetime in building construction, I pay my tribute to all associated with the design and construction of the building.” On such an occasion as the opening of the new building, he had further pride in being associated with the Lyttelton Harbour Board as its chief executive officer, said the secretary-manager (Mr A. L. Burk).
“Lyttelton is the third port in New Zealand both as regards shipping tonnage and cargo handled. At the present time, the economy of New Zealand is expanding at a rapid rate. Nowhere is this more in evidence than in Canterbury, both in the primary and secondary industry fields and all the indications are that such a trend will continue in the years that lie ahead.
“This impressive building ts worthy of the city and will stand for decades as a mark in the city’s life of the stature of the board With others. I join in heartily congratulating all connected with its design and erection.”
