FENDALTON PARK TREES
Gums And Poplars To
Be Removed
Eight poplar trees in Fendalton Park, which figured in a recent controversy—“along with three old gum trees”—are to be felled, the Waimairi County Council decided at its meeting last evening. Felling of the trees was held up after protests from people living near the park when two trees were cut down.
The county engineer (Mr D. P. McLellan) reported that the two trees felled were “rotten in the centre” and boring had shown the other trees to be the same.
Moving that all the trees should be taken out. Cr. A. R. Blank said: “Those old gum trees I have fought for years to save.” However, the boring had shown the trees to be “thoroughly rotten,” he added.
