PARLIAMENT’S DIARY

Yesterday, possibly the most controversial measure of the session—the Land and Income Tax (Annual) Bill—was introduced and given a first reading in the House of Representatives. After this and two small bills had been considered, and seven questions had been asked Ministers, the House discussed local bills. Of the nine bills on this Order Paper, three were passed through all stages, and the others were set down for a third reading on Thursday. The House spent the rest of the afternoon and nearly all evening discussing the irrigation report, which was finally received for consideration by the Government shortly before 10 p.m. Until the House rose at 10.30 p.m. until 9.30 a.m. today, members continued with the second reading of the National Savings Amendment Bill.
