(Rec. 8.3 p.m.) LONDON, August 29
The National Coal Board announced today that between 205 and 240 British coal mines would be closed by 1965. This was announced after the Coal Industry National Consultative Council's meeting today at which the National Coal Board’s plans to reduce output were discussed.
A Coal Board spokesman emphasised that 170 of the pits were already scheduled to shut down in any event through ex haustion of supplies, merging of pits and transfer of men to new pits. Between 35 and 70 pits woulo be closed on economic grounds according to the level of demand for coal. It was estimated that the present manpower figure of 660.000 would drop to about 600.000 my 1965.
The spokesman said that most of the men displaced would be found alternative jobs in the industry. He said that the revised plan for the industry was based on an estimate of demand in 1965
