Hospital Standby Plant
Sir, —Several months ago a severe electrical fault plunged Christchurch into darkness and it was found there was little or no emergency power or lighting provision in the Christchurch Hospital. We were assured by the hospital board through your paper that steps had already been taken to implement standby plant and the essential wiring was being done so that this could not happen again. Could you ascertain for me and for the public of Christchurch what standby provisions have been made in the Christchurch Hospital and what standby provisions have been made at the Cashmere Hospital? Major power failures do happen.—Yours, etc., BE PREPARED. August 9, 1959. [The chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) said that the standby plant at Christchurch Hospital had been installed and had been functioning for some time. The board had on order further equipment to incorporate automatic starting. At the Princess Margaret Hospital automatic emergency lighting equipment was installed and a standby plant was being provided for.]
