Eisenhower’s Programme

LONDON, August 16. Mr James Hagerty, the White House news secretary, left London by air today for Washington after discussing detailed security and other arrangements for President Eisenhower’s forthcoming visit to Britain with senior British officials. Mr Hagerty will report to President Eisenhower at Gettysburg tomorrow.

Before leaving London airport he told reporters that the President’s programme this far was: August 27: Arrive in London; August 28: A visit to Balmoral. Scotland, to see the Queen. August 29 and 30: Talks on world problems with Mr Macmillan at Chequers, official country residence of the British Prime Minister.

After that the President would spend about two nights in London before flying to Paris in the morning of September 2.

Asked about security men, Mr Hagerty replied: “Usually you won’t notice they are there.” He said he was sure the President would be delighted to see Sir Winston Churchill “but on present knowledge I don’t know whether Sir Winston will be back while the President is here.” When the topic of golf arose. Mr Hagerty said categorically: “He is not bringing his golf clubs with him.”

The President is visiting Bonn. London and Paris for consultations with top Allied leaders in preparation for his talks in Washington in mid-September with Mr Khrushchev.
