TWO-YEAR-OLD PARADE
McLean Stakes Preliminary
"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, August 17. The parade of two-year-olds at the Otago Hunt Club meeting on Saturday will be of particular interest as most of the 16 candid - dates are likely runners in the McLean Stakes, the Dunedin Jockey Club’s classic to be held next month. Astra, one of seven in the colts' and geldings’ section, is by imported Astraeus, whose first crop of foals commanded attention at the National yearling sales in January. Mr G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, had to go to 1300gns to secure this well-developed colt.
Astra comes from a successful Southland family, his dam being the Salmagundi mare. Sister Sal, winner of eight races. Sister Sal, which is out of the Paladin mare, Waiau Maid, has already proved her worth at the stud through her successful son, Salador, winner of more than £4OOO in Australia, and the winners Buenos Aires and Minnesota. Astra is a member of D. G. O’Neill’s team at Wingatui. One of the most attractivelooking fillies being educated at Wingatui for early two-year-old races is Bernadine, which will race in the colours of Mrs A. E. Anderton, wife of the well-known trainer, H. A. Anderton. Bernadine is one of nine runners in the fillies’ section of the parade on Saturday. She is by the successful colonial sire, Harken from the good race mare White Robe.
