WELL-SPONSORED EFFORT
Many Organisations Represented The committee which organises Children’s Book Week is very representative and is able to enlist the support of many sections of the community. Originally it was composed of librarians, teachers and booksellers, but now it has widened its scope to include representatives from the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Library Association, the Canterbury Education Board, the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, the Christchurch Headmasters’ Association, the Canterbury Federation of Parent-Teacher Associations, the Women’s Committee of the National Council of Churches, the Catholic Women’s League, the Broadcasting Service, the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association, and the Canterbury and Westland branch of the Booksellers’ Association.
The support which the committee is able to enlist from many organisations, individuals and private firms enables it to carry through an ambitious programme each year on a very meagre budget. “The programme which the committee is able to carry through is a practical monument to the community effort and what it can accomplish,” said a member of the committee.
