Hockey PRESENTATION TO MR W. H. DOWN
Recognition Of Service To Sport (New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, August 17. A chiming clock, a memento of his services to the sport as a player, umpire, selector, and administrator, was presented to Mr W. H. Down of Christchurch, by the president of the New Zealand Hockey Association (Mr S. Burnell Browne) at a dinner in Napier on Saturday night. Mr Down was honorary secretary of the national association for 35 years until his recent retirement. Mr J. G. Leggat, chairman of the national association, said that Mr Down was the only New Zealander who had been appointed to an Olympic hockey jury. He had been a national selector for some years, and it was through contacts Mr Down had made overseas and by his own personal efforts that topline hockey teams had visited New Zealand.
New Trophy A new trophy, the W. Havilah Down Cup, is to be competed for annually by hockey teams in New Zealand.
A decision on which system the cup will be played for will be made at the next meeting of the New Zealand association in April. 1960 It is likely that the competition will be run on similar lines to the Chatham Cup in Association football. The cup was presented bv a group of hockey supporters in Napier at the week-end in honour of Mr Down
