SUNKEN BOAT RECOVERED
Rangitata Mouth Accident
Two members of the Canterbury Underwater Club worked in icy cold conditions for more than an hour yesterday afternoon in a successful attempt to salvage the small boat which capsised in a lagoon near the mouth of the Rangitata river on Saturday night.
One of the two occupants ot the boat—John Derryck Cates of Ashburton was drowned.
Using aqua lungs and frogman suits, the two divers, Messrs G D. Laughton, and R. Bruce, both of Ashburton, searched the lagoon for an hour and a quarter late yesterday afternoon and were assisted by Senior Sergeant J. Devlin and Constables J. Scott and P. Maxwell.
“We were just about to give up the search,” said Mr Laughton last evening, “when I peered over the side of our boat and noticed what appeared to be something dark in the water.” He immediately dived over ana located the sunken boat which was lying in about 10 feet of water. The outboard motor was removed to lighten the load. The hull was then dragged to the shore with ropes. Mr Laughton said the boat did not appear to be damaged. An inquest into the death of Cates was adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been completed yesterday morning.
