MAKARIOS BACKED

Allegiance Of Eoka Men

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) NICOSIA, August 16.

Cheering crowds today heard a spokesman for E.D.M.A.—Eoka’s political successor—pledge his organisation’s unreserved allegiance and support for Archbishop Makarios.

They were attending the unveiling of a monument to the Eoka hero, Andreas Zakos, at Limour village in Central Cyprus. According to the American Associated Press, Nicos Mushuras, a former Eoka fighter, called: “Are you ready to fight with every means at your disposal, and at any sacrifice, for the foundation of a new republic.

The crowd of several thousand roared assent.

They cheered again after he shouted: “Are you ready under the flag of Makarios to destroy every opposition and destructive influence?”

The spokesman said: “We will build. our republic in spite of plots and conspiracies.”

The unveiling was conducted by the pro-Grivas Bishop Kyprianos, of Kyrenia, who was shouted down for the second time in a week when he shouted “Long live Enosis.” But the crowd roared back: “Long live Makarios.”
