U.S. MUTTON IMPORTS
Concern At Trade With N.Z.
(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, August 15. Sheep producers of the western United States met yesterday to hear United States and foreign sheep industry leaders discuss foreign imports of live and frozen lamb and mutton. Members of a panel discussing the problem were Messrs S. D. Reeves, president, and A. P. O’Shea, general secretary, of Federated Farmers of New Zealand. They are in the United States seeking to expand the American outlet for their frozen lamb. Mr Dennis Muirhead. of the Australian Meat Board, represented his country.
Vigorous opposition to the importing of foreign meats at prices below those of United States products was expressed at the meeting by domestic sheepmen.
Mr W. P. Rikard, of Manchester, California, president of the California Wool Growers’ Association, said: “The United States sheep industry stands on the brink of disaster unless we can ward off threats of foreign lamb and mutton taking over our domestic market.”
