N.Z. PUBLICITY IN U.S.
Outdoor Sport Not Emphasised
(New Zeaiana Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 16.
Sir Edmund Hillary returned this evening from three weeks in the United States convinced that New Zealand is not doing its best to sell tourist attractions to Americans. “I know it has been said oefore,” he said, “but our publicity generally is not hitting the mark.
“There is a tremendous interest in the outdoors in America now. Hunting, shooting, and fishing are attracting Americans as never before. “What would attract Americans to New Zealand in the spirit that is easily available here. Emphasising geysers and so on in advertisements is not good enough —anyway, Americans have bubbling pools better than ours.” Sir Edmund and Lady Hillary flew to the United States where he received the “Giants of Adventure” annual award from Argosy magazine. He appeared on nine-television shows while in New York and Chicago, and he made an educational film on mountain climbing.
