460 OREGONS PLANTED
South Malvern Schools’ Scheme
Four hundred and sixty Oregon pines were planted by 110 children from the Glentunnel, Homebush, and South Malvern Schools at this month’s annual Arbor Day ceremony of the South Malvern District Schools’ Endowment Plantation Scheme. Their communal plantation is at Coalgate. These schools now have about 1500 Oregon trees established on the site, with a wide range of specimen and native trees as well. Opening the ceremony, the chairman of the committee (Mr E. Karst) welcomed a large gathering of parents and friends who have always supported the children in their project. Mr R. R. Beauchamp expressed the Canterbury Education Board’s appreciation of the progress of this endowment plantation. Mr A. W. Grayburn, a forester of the 'Selwyn Plantation Board, demonstrated tree planting. He was careful to show the children how to place a small tree (for support) in the side of the hole opposite the prevailing strong north-west winds of the area. Then the whole gathering moved into the plantation, the adults digging the holes while the children planted. Many of the seedling trees had been raised in schools’ own miniature nurseries.
