CANTERBURY STAKES

Up And Coming

Wins

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 16. The New Zealand galloper Up ard Coming proved a very worthy favourite for both the Epsom Handicap and Caulfield Cup with an on-the-bit win in the six-furlong Canterbury Stakes at Canterbury yesterday.

Ridden only hands and heels by the leading jockey, Neville Sellwood, Up and Comming (11 to 8 on favourite) clocked • the smart time of Imin 11 7-10 sec for the six. Ha won by a neck from Cornelius (33 to 1), with Grey Ghost (4 to 1) third two lengths away. Up and Coming might be on his way to America to run in the Laurel International when the Caulfield Cup is being run on October 17. Hil trainer, Maurice McCarten, said today the trip was as yet at the "possibility” stage.

Bookmakers took a gamble against Up and Coming when the early favourite Gold Stakes was scratched. After opening at 6 to 4 on. Up and Coming drifted to 5 to 4 on before starting at 11 to 8 on. Up and Coming carried weight-for-ase today—9-0. He has 8-13 in the Epsom and 8-11 in the Caulfield Cup. Up and Coming surprised most racegoers, including several New Zealanders, with the ease of his win. The surprising feature of his performance was the speed Up and Coming showed early. Although known for his staying feats in New Zealand, he showed terrific speed today and was never further back than third.

Of the beaten horses nothing Impressed more than Man of Iron, which finished fourth. This gelding is the winner of 10 races, and as * two-year-old looked like becoming one of Australia's best. Because Man of Iron had won rich two-year-old events he carried full weight .vesterday. He drops from 9-0 to 7-8 in the Epsom, which is a verv big drop indeed for s horse in form. Result:— CANTERBURY STAKES, •' Of £2700; six furlongs.
