Crossbreds Firmer At Dunedin Sale

(Aew Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, August 16. Prices were well above those for the corresponding sale last year when the winter crutchings sale, the first of the season, was held in Dunedin on Saturday. A record entry of

29.000 bales from Otago and Southland was offered, and rices realised, particularly those for crossbred fleece wool, exceeded expectations. Values were Is to 15d better than. last year for crossbred crutchings and fleece wools, and for some lots this improvement was exceeded.

The increase over the prices at the corresponding sale last year was 40 per cent, for fleece wools and about 30 per cent, for crutchings.

Compared with rates at recent North Island sales, prices for crutchings appeared to be a shade easier, but all classes of crossbred wool met good competition at prices well above those ruling at the corresponding sale last year. Finer wools, however, did not show the same appreciation, and were inclined to be erratic. Oddments and locks, in particular, were not so keenly competed for. The sale was made up of crutchings and early-shorn wool from the various districts of Otago and Southland.

There was a good proportion of wool held over from last season offered by the Wool Commission This was disposed of at satisfactory prices. The sale proceeded rather slowly, not finishing until after 10 p.m.

TTie wool generally opened up in good condition, and there was an absence of stain and dirt. Th.ere was some dust appearing in some of the North Otago clips, however. The clip was well grown and sound, and was well up to the standards expected for this time of the year. There was a full bench of buyers, with America, Bradford and the C ontinent being the main operators.

The m.-rket for crutchings maybe quoted .up to 2 per cent, cheaper for good types, while prices were

erratic for average and inferior styles, and may be quoted as being easier,” said the official report issued by the Invercargill and Dunedin Woolbrokers' Associations in conjunction with the Woolbuyers’ Association and the Wool Commission.

The report added: “In comparison, new season’s fleece wool may be quoted as being in, sellers’ favour on prices ruling in recent North Island sales.

“The offering consisted of 10,500 bales offered by Invercargill brokers, and 10,890 bales offered by Dunedin brokers.

“The offering from both centres comprised a bulk of crutchings, with a good selection of pre-lamb shorn fleece of good length., In addition to these, the Wool Commission offered approximatley 7369 bales of stock wool, comprising a wide range of predominately fine wool types. “Wools opened up in very good condition, especially pre-lamb shorn fleece wools, being sound and light in condition.” The official range of prices is:—
