MINNESOTA RIOT
Negroes And
Police
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) ST. PAUL (Minnesota), Aug. 16. Forty policemen and firemen, using police dogs, quelled a riot involving about 300 persons in a negro district yesterday. Several persons were injured and six were imprisoned after the early morning fight which resulted when police asked a negro, Robert Price, aged 26, for identification.
Police said the riot began when detectives stopped Price. He refused to produce any identification, police said, and started to fight the detectives. “Almost immediately the area became crowded with people and a number began interfering with us.” one detective said.
Several squads of. police and a fire truck arrived and were greeted by a barrage of stones and bottles. The fighting lasted more than an hour.
It broke up after firemen turned hoses on the crowd and police started swinging their batons.
