Efficiency Of Production
With 900,000 acres of exotic pine forests, mostly radiata, and an efficient sawmilling industry, New Zealand is able to meet her own requirements for pine and at the same time provide a surplus for export. The New Zealand Forest Service and private companies have invested millions of pounds in plants and are now engaged in a vigorous drive towards the full utilisation of the growing forests. Conversion techniques employed in New Zealand for the production of exotic timber have been adopted from the best in modern Scandinavian and North American practice. Conscious of the demands it will have to meet, the industry is geared for the efficient production of quality timber on a competitive j basis.
After nearly two decades of producing radiata timber in volume, 'primarily for the home market but with a surplus for export, the New Zealand sawmilling industry has passed out of the experimental and developmental stage and has become a major industry and the cut of exotic timber is continually growing.
