BUSY MONTH FOR Y.M.C.A.

Special Holiday Programme

This month will be one of the busiest of the year for the Y.M.C.A. in Christchurch, said the general secretary (Mr A. E. Collins) yesterday. A greatlyvaried programme has been drawn up for the August school holidays and the beginning of September. The first functions on the holiday programme are a series of day camps at Motukarara for both central and suburban Y.M.C.A. boys. From August 24 to 27 boys will be taken to camp in the morning and return in the late afternoon.

“This is about the third year we have run these camps,” said Mr Collins. “We have found them most satisfactory and very popular.” On August 28 the Y.M.C.A. street appeal will be held, the proceeds to go to the general funds of the association. A Rugby, soccer and indoor basketball tournament has been organised for Christchurch members on August 31, and suburban boys will be taken on a conducted tour of the National Airways Corporation workshops at Harewood. The following day suburban members will take part in a kite-flying contest at Rawhiti Domain. Prizes will be given for the highest-flying ordinary and box kite, and for the bestdecorated kite. Fair Organised A fair has been organised by all departments in the association’s building in Cambridge terrace from September 2 to 4. Side shows, a puppet show, and stalls have been planned. The suburban division will end its holiday activities with a weekend camp for primary schoolboys at Motukarara. The Christchurch association will be host to about 50 girls from associations in the Hutt Valley, Masterton, Palmerston North, Invercargill and Nelson at the first national girls’ tournament from September 5 to 7. In the same week-end six secondary schoolboys from Christchurch will travel to Invercargill to attend the seventh national boys’ tournament. They will return to Christchurch after the tournament finishes on September 9.
