Seven Killed In Swiss Storm
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ZURICH, August 11.
Workmen were today clearing blocked roads and railways and sweeping up the debris of a freak storm which raced across Switzerland yesterday afternoon, killing at least seven persons. Trees were uprooted and houses stripped of their roofs by 90-mile-an-hour winds. Five of those killed were drowned in Swiss lakes when the storm sank or capsised their boats. A woman camper was killed by a falling tree and a workman was blown 60ft to the ground from the scaffolding of a building site.
Thousands of acres of vineyards were stripped and other crops were flattened to the ground. An 80ft-high waterspout roared across Lake Brienz, central Switzerland.
