TEN CHARGES ADMITTED
Car Conversion And Theft
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 12.
Two charges of car conversion and eight of breaking and entering and theft in an area from Kaitaia to Silverdale were admitted in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today by Tarau Rewi, aged 30, a waterside worker. The police prosecutor (Mr H. W. Austin) said Rewi was associated with two other men who had been arrested at Wairoa after failing to stop when chased by a police car. The offences occurred between July 18 and 21.
The three went to North Auckland, broke into three sheds at Kaitaia and the T.A.B. office, where they tried to open the safe, and entered the Army warehouse, stealing four .38 revolvers, 1689 rounds of ammunition, clothing, and postal notes. At Horeki they entered the post office and stole £8 and two bank books. They converted two cars in Whangarei and on the way back to Auckland entered a land agent’s office at Silverdale and a shop at Dairy Flat. Rewi left his companions in Auckland but retained a revolver and 24 rounds. Of the total of £Bl2 stolen, £762 had been recovered, said Mr Austin. Rewi would be appearing on another series of breaking and entering charges, he said. Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., remanded him for a week for a probation officer’s report.
