Prime Minister’s Message
Both the Associated General Contractors’ Federation and the Government were shaping New Zealand, the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) said in a message read at the 'opening session of the federation’s conference yesterday. They were collaborating in seeing that public jobs were completed as quickly, soundly and economically as possible, said Mr Nash. Many constructional tasks were ahead and only by the pooling of knowledge, experience and skill would the best interests of the country be served. The contractors played an important part in the development of New Zealand, said the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), officially opening the conference. He recalled that when the late Mr R. Semple (Minister of Works) started the machine to cut the first sod of the Christchurch Airport he said the days of the wheelbarrow were gone and the burden would be shifted to heavy machinery. The Mayor congratulated the contractors on their collaboration with the Government in advancing the economics of the country.
The industry would like to play a bigger part in the development, replied the president (Mr T. K. Culley).
