Lord De La Warr, chairman of the Council of the Royal Commonwealth Society, will visit New Zealand from September 29 to October 10, accompanied by Lady De La Warr. His visit will be part of a tour through Ceylon. Australia, and New Zealand, his first since he became chairman. The object of his tour is to make contact with members of the society, and also to stimulate interest in the wider aspects and responsibilities of the Commonwealth.—(P.A.)
Mr N. G. Pickering, M.P. for St. Albans, who was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital at the week-end, is reported to be making satisfactory progress. A member of Mr Pickering's family said yesterday that he had no serious illness and that he had merely been ordered into hospital for rest. It was reported that his stay there would be brief.
Dr. H. Sampson, lecturer in psychology at the University of Canterbury, will leave today for Melbourne to attend the conference of the Australian branch of the British Psychological Society next week Dr. Sampson will deliver a paper. Mr C. H. Clemens, president of the Christ’s College Old Boys' Association,, will leave Christchurch next Tuesday to attend a special dinner being held by the New South Wales branch of the association. While in Sydney he will be the guest of the association.
Mr Duncan L. Ensor, of Glenrock Station, Rakaia Gorge, has been appointed judge of the blade shearing competition to be conducted at the Christchurch show this year. The Canterbury School Committees’ Association last evening expressed regret at the death of Mr S, G. Farquhar, a member of the Belfast School Committee for 33 years, and its chairman for the last 10, and a member of the Canterbury Education Board for the last six years.
