Reserved Decision By Magistrate

George Johnson, aged 39. of 37 Collins crescent. Feilding, was convicted and fined £lO by Mr D. G. Sinclair. S.M., in a reserved judgment he read in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North today. Johnson was charged with operating a pick system and a common gaming house.

The Magistrate’s decision states that a book, published by the defendant, set out the horses competing at a particular race meeting and included comments on three horses in each race. In addition, there was a competition inviting purchasers to pick six horses in the last six races. The results were worked out on a point basis, five points for a first horse, three for a second and one for a third. The person who forwarded the winning entry was entitled to a prize of £lOO and in the event of a tie, the prize-money was to be equally divided among the winners.
