1080 POISONING NOT DANGEROUS TO HUMANS
Poisoning noxious animals with 108 a poison does not cause indirect danger to man. Experiments with the poison by the Department of Agriculture have indicated that no hazard to man or animals is created by drinking running water in areas where the poison has been used.
Any sheep eating 1080 poison baits dropped for rabbits would die before it consumed a sufficiency of the poison to make its flesh dangerous for human consumption.
The experiments have also shown that there can be no danger of accidental poisoning of a deerstalker eating venison from deer shot during 1080 poisoning operations.
Describing the experiments, the annual report of the Department of Agriculture says that from the amount of poison used an acre in killing rabbits and opossums it is “certain” that no danger is created to man or animals from drinking running
In dropping rabbit bait from the air, it cannot be certain that every uneaten bait is picked up before returning sheep to the poisoned country, the report says However, tests by dosing sheep with various amounts of poison, and feeding the mutton to does showed that with the amount of poison used on the rabbit baits a sheep could not eat enough baits to make its flesh toxic to humans before it died itself from the direct effects of the poison. At
lower levels -of 1080 intake the ite .^ esh would be so low that no risk would occur to humans eating the mutton. similar tests on dogs with the loan vs ” ous amounts of 1080 poison bait® showed that consumption of 321 b of the most oxic meat, or 2071 b of thZ teast oxic, would be required to kill man of about lOst. the report
