HOME AID SERVICE

Expansion Limited By Staff Shortage Although charges for the home aid service have increased, the demand for it continues at a high level and expansion is limited only by difficulties in recruitment of sufficient aids, says the annual report of the Labour Department. Last year service was provided foi| 1901 cases, including 765 maternity cases, compared with 1738 and 759 respectively in 1957. Service could not be provided for 386 cases, because insufficient aids were available. In order to minimise the loss incurred in operating the service, charges to householders were increased from 2s 6d an hour to 4s an hour, or from £5 to £8 a week. Provision exists for householders who are unable to meet the maximum charge. The service is operating In Auckland, Lower Hutt, Wellington and Dunedin. Last year an average of 58 home aids were employed compared with an average of 61 in 1957.
